This report describes severe maternal morbidity and maternal mortality for Illinois women. It includes a description of the state's process for identifying pregnancy-associated deaths, for determining which cases are selected for MMRC review, and for supporting the state MMRCs. It also details the data from maternal mortality surveillance and review in Illinois, which particular focus on disparities, causes of death, relationship to pregnancy, and preventability. The major themes from maternal mortality review are synthesized, and specific recommendations for preventing maternal deaths are detailed.
